What Are the Safest Cities in the San Gabriel Valley?
Which cities are the safest in the San Gabriel Valley?
The five safest cities in the San Gabriel Valley based on total crime rate are Sierra Madre, San Marino, Bradbury, Temple City, and Duarte. All five report crime rates below 1,500 incidents per 100,000 residents, far below the national average of 2,119.
This data comes from AreaVibes using the 2024 FBI Uniform Crime Reports released in September 2025.
When my clients ask where families feel safest in the SGV, these cities come up often in our conversations.
The Safest City in the SGV: Sierra Madre
Sierra Madre has the lowest crime rate in the San Gabriel Valley at 806 crimes per 100,000 residents. That is about 62 percent lower than the national average.
The city reported just 85 total crime incidents among about 10,800 residents. Violent crime accounted for only 22 incidents during the entire year.
In real life, I see Sierra Madre attract buyers who want a quiet foothill community with a small-town feel. It is the kind of place where neighbors know each other and families stay long term.
One Google review from a client reflects how I guide families through these choices: “Armando helped us find a safe neighborhood where we felt comfortable raising our kids.”
San Marino and Bradbury: Extremely Low Crime Communities
San Marino and Bradbury rank second and third in the valley for safety. San Marino reports about 1,210 crimes per 100,000 residents, while Bradbury reports about 1,247.
San Marino stands out for extremely low violent crime. Only four violent crimes were reported during the entire year.
Bradbury is unique because it has fewer than 1,000 residents. With such a small population, the statistics can swing quickly if even a few incidents occur.
What people do not realize until they start researching cities is how population size can distort crime statistics.
Temple City and Duarte: Safe Cities With Larger Populations
Temple City and Duarte round out the top five safest cities in the San Gabriel Valley.
Temple City reports about 1,275 crimes per 100,000 residents and has nearly 36,000 residents. That larger population makes the statistics more stable and reliable.
Duarte reports about 1,471 crimes per 100,000 residents, which is still about 31 percent below the national average.
Many of my first-time buyers look at Duarte because it often offers more attainable entry points into the SGV housing market, similar to what we are seeing in West Covina’s 2026 housing market.
An anonymous client once started their search in Pasadena but ended up buying in Duarte after realizing they could get more space while still being in one of the safer cities.
Why Crime Rates Vary Across the SGV
Crime rates vary widely across the San Gabriel Valley because some cities are small residential communities while others are large urban centers with major commercial corridors.
For example, cities like Industry and Irwindale appear extremely high on crime charts. What people do not realize until they see the data is that these cities have tiny residential populations but huge daytime workforces and commercial activity.
A real mistake I see buyers make is assuming the entire valley is the same. In reality, crime rates vary significantly from one city to the next.
Twelve San Gabriel Valley cities actually fall below the national crime average, which shows that there are many safe options throughout the region.
What Families Should Consider When Choosing a City
Safety is important, but it should be one of several factors when choosing where to live, especially when deciding whether a condo or single family home makes more sense for your first purchase. School districts, commute times, housing types, and community feel also play a major role.
When I help buyers choose a city, we usually look at the full picture, including how much home your income actually supports in today’s market. Crime data, school districts, price ranges, and long-term growth all matter.
The San Gabriel Valley has a wide range of neighborhoods, and understanding those differences can make a big impact on your buying decision.
